Cyprian Ekwensi

The exquisite literary virtuoso Cyprian Odiatu Duaka Ekwensi was born on September 26, 1921, in Minna, Northern Nigeria, and eventually made his mark in Onitsha. Educated at Achimota College and Chelsea School of Pharmacy, he began as a pharmacist before evolving into a highly productive writer. His writing career started with episodic craftsmanship, creating masterpieces like 'People of the City' (1954). Ekwensi's pen became a cultural exploratory tool, revealing the complexities of pastoral Fulani life in 'Burning Grass' (1961) and reflecting the conflict of tradition and modernity in 'Jagua Nana' (1961). His varied writings continued through the decades, including 'Beautiful Feathers' (1963), 'Iska' (1966), and later works like 'Divided We Stand' (1980). Ekwensi's literary tendrils also extended to children's literature, crafting stories that sparked young minds. His contribution to broadcasting and journalism established him as a visionary who shared stories that touched his people intimately. Ekwensi passed away in 2007, but his stories remain, encapsulating the quintessential evolution of Nigerian writing. A library was established in his name at the Niger State Book Development Agency in Minna, Niger State.

Abubakar Imam

A pillar of Nigerian letters, a sharp voice in journalism, and a key figure in Nigerian politics. His journey began in the quiet town of Kagara in Minna, Niger State, where he walked through life on a very creative and intelligent path. His intellectual life began as a student at Katsina College, where curiosity first found its feet. He honed his intellectual cutting edge at the School of Education, University of London, discovering how potent a change agent he as a writer could be. A very important element is the fact that he was fluent in spoken and written words. Working at Gaskiya Ta Fi Kwabo, the first Hausa-language newspaper in Northern Nigeria, he was seen as an idea pioneer and pragmatic follower of informed dialogue. As the first Hausa-speaking editor, he provided readers with an array of viewpoints that addressed the aspirations and concerns of his people. He was an accomplished writer, and some of the successful works authored by him include 'Magana Jari Ce,' 'Ruwan Bagaja,' and 'Tarihin Annabi Kammalalle,' through which he endeavored to illuminate the audience on the culture, history, and mysteries surrounding the North Nigeria spiritual experience. The journey of Abubakar Imam was not solely on the pages of a book. Rather, it was a political and upliftment process through and within society. With individuals like Robert East, Imam was a pioneering force in building a company like the Gaskiya Corporation. A haven for those with clever thinking and a launchpad for courageous oration, Imam collaborated with others to create a major political milestone in building a part of Nigeria with individuals from the Northern People's Congress (NPC), including himself, Umaru Agaie, and Nuhu Bamalli. They created a guiding part of its administration. Abubakar Imam was a combination of intellect, ink, and influence—leaving an indelible mark in the annals of his time and remaining a permanent symbol of hope for many seeking to enrich minds, evoke hearts, and influence society as a whole. The Federal Government of Nigeria has honored his legacy by identifying Minna airport with his name, just as the Niger State Library bears his name too.

Ben Okri

Ben Okri was born on March 15, 1959, in Minna, Nigeria. He is a Nigerian novelist, poet, and short-story writer best known for blending everyday reality with the supernatural in his work. He was educated at Urhobo College in Warri and later at the University of Essex in England. These experiences shaped his outlook and writing. His early novels, 'Flowers and Shadows' (1980) and 'The Landscapes Within' (1981), use surreal imagery to examine political unrest and corruption in Nigeria. Okri is also known for his short stories. Collections such as 'Incidents at the Shrine' (1986) and 'Stars of the New Curfew' (1988) draw heavily on Nigerian spiritual beliefs, where the physical world and the spirit world exist side by side. His most famous work, 'The Famished Road' (1991), won the Booker Prize. The novel follows Azaro, an abiku (spirit child), and explores themes of survival, identity, and social struggle. The story continues in 'Songs of Enchantment' (1993) and 'Infinite Riches' (1998), forming a trilogy that reflects life in a nation facing constant instability. Other novels by Okri include 'Astonishing the Gods' (1995), 'Dangerous Love' (1996), 'In Arcadia' (2002), 'Starbook' (2007), 'The Age of Magic' (2014), and 'The Freedom Artist' (2019). Across these works, he consistently merges the ordinary with the mythical. As a poet, Okri has published collections such as 'An African Elegy' (1992) and 'Mental Flight' (1999), focusing on endurance, disorder, and hope. His essays, including 'A Way of Being Free' (1997) and 'A Time for New Dreams' (2011), reflect on culture, freedom, and Africa's place in the world. Though not directly political, Okri's writing insists on African self-determination and imagination. His work has earned international acclaim while remaining imbibed in Nigerian experience.

Abubakar Gimba

Abubakar Gimba was born in Nassarawa, Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State, and lived most of his life in Minna. He was a writer, banker, administrator, and public intellectual whose career moved easily between literature, finance, and public service. Gimba was a former National President of the Association of Nigerian Authors and an executive director in the banking sector. He played a key role in the establishment of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai. His novels—'Witness to Tears,' 'Trail of Sacrifice,' 'Innocent Victims,' 'Sunset for a Mandarin,' and 'Golden Apples'—are among the most important works of modern Nigerian fiction. They focus on society, morality, power, and personal responsibility, written in clear and disciplined prose. Beyond writing, Gimba held several leadership positions. He was Chairman of the Concern Foundation and Savannah Group Ltd, combining cultural advocacy with business management. In finance, he served as Executive Director at Union Bank of Nigeria and United Bank for Africa, showing strong command of economic and institutional systems. His public service record includes serving as Permanent Secretary in the Niger State Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning. He was also Pro-Chancellor of IBB University, Lapai, Chairman of its Implementation Committee, and a former President of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. These roles placed him at the centre of education and policy development in Northern Nigeria. Gimba earned a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Cincinnati, USA. He travelled widely across Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, experiences that broadened his outlook and informed his writing. He participated in the International Writing Program in the United States under a State Department grant. In addition to novels, Gimba wrote short stories, poetry, essays, and newspaper columns. He was a respected public speaker and a committed humanitarian. His work consistently returned to one concern: the health of society depends on its ability to raise thoughtful, ethical, and functional human beings.

Mamman Jiya Vatsa

Mamman Jiya Vatsa emerged on Nigeria's literary scene in the early 1970s as a rare blend of soldier and poet. An officer in the Nigerian Army, he built a parallel life in literature, proving that military discipline and creative imagination could coexist. His entry into poetry was modest. He sent his poems to Okike journal at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where Chinua Achebe noticed his work and recognised his talent. This marked the beginning of a serious literary career that ran alongside his military service. Vatsa wrote in English, Hausa, Nupe, and pidgin. His range was wide, covering children's books and poetry collections such as Tori For Geti Bow Leg. Between 1974 and 1985, he published almost two books every year, making him one of the most productive writers of his time. Within the army, he actively encouraged writing. He organised workshops for soldiers and their families and worked to build a literary culture in military spaces. He also donated 63 hectares of land in Abuja for the creation of a Writers' Village, meant to support Nigerian writers. Vatsa received several honours, including the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), first prize in poetry at the North-Central State Festival of Arts, and a Gold Medal from the Union of Bulgarian Writers. His life stands as evidence that service and creativity need not be separate paths. Today, the Association of Nigerian Authors' Writers' Village in Abuja bears his name, keeping his contribution to Nigerian literature alive.

BM Dzukogi

Baba Muhammad Dzukogi known as BM Dzukogi, is from Bida, Niger State. He attended the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, specialising in Physical and Health Education (PHE). Born in 1965 to parents who didn't attend any Western school and into a family of four, where he is the second. BM Dzukogi's activism in literary art, mentoring and youth affairs has dwarfed his area of specialization with a resounding national prominence. He is known as the father of Nigerian teen authors. A former National Secretary of the Association of Nigerian Authors and pioneer Director-General of Niger State Book Development Agency. Dzukogi, a Teacher, Mentor, Poet, Philosopher, Sports Administrator, Father and Grandfather, has steadily and diligently walked himself into the hearts of Nigerian young writers as a detribalised leader and role model. He founded the Hill-Top Creative Arts Foundation (HCAF) for teen artists in 2004 with over 20 branches in Nigeria, including Bayelsa, Ogun, Osun, Lagos, Oyo, Kwara, Nasarawa, Abuja, Kogi, Kaduna, Kano, Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, Plateau, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Yobe and as well as in Lapai, Kontagora LGs of Niger State. The foundation has a mentoring facility in Minna, Niger State, where young people converge for mentoring in art, citizenship and leadership. The Blue Resolution Initiative (TBRi), promoting good governance and accountability in Niger State, is his brainchild. He inaugurated the Nigerian Teen Authorship Scheme (NTAS) which has published over thirty (50) teen authors in Nigeria to own books in the last 19 years. Dzukogi founded the Nigerian Festival of Teen Authors (NIFESTEENA) in 2017, which has metamorphosed into HIASFEST (Hadiza Ibrahim Aliyu Schools Festival), Africa's largest teen arts festival. It is an annual N20m project in Niger State, attracting schools from around the country, sponsored by Alh. Bala Abdullahi Kwatu and the Aliyu Trust Foundation. It is a brand from Niger State to the world. He also founded the Nigerian Writers Series (NWS) of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), patterned after the defunct African Writers Series. He established The Nigeria Review (TNR), an online Journal for reviewing books; Literature Voices (LitVo), an online Journal exclusively for interviewing writers worldwide; and Polarsphere Media Limited, publishers of teen authors in Nigeria. Similarly, he is the draughtsman for the Annual Schools Carnival of Arts and Festival of Songs (ASCAFS), which ran for 22yrs in Niger State before folding up as well as being the draughtsman MBA International Literary Colloquium in honour of the former governor of Niger State which attracted Wole Soyinka, Odia Ofeimun, Joachin Chisano, Pius Adesanmi to Niger State from 2011 to 2015. Dzukogi is the author of many books across poetry, short stories, aphorisms, essays, and children's literature: 'Midnight Lamp' (Poetry), published 1996; 'These Last Tears' (Poetry), published 1997; 'Mystery Stones' (Children's Story), published 1999; 'Teacher Dangana is a Cheat' (Children's Story), published 2008; 'Jamilu the Reader' (Children's Story), published 2005; 'Potholes in my Dream' (Collection of Short Story), published 2007; 'Sex is Beautiful' (Essay on Sexuality Education), published 2008; 'Young Couple Young Home' (Family Life Essay), published 2010; 'Being True To Himself' (Collection of Interviews), published 2012; and 'Seclusion' (Personal Quotes), published 2015. There is hardly any writer with a tremendous impact on Nigerian teen authors than him. The central focus of his themes revolves around man, environment and creativity. In 2012, he suggested the creation of the Niger State Book Development Agency. He became its Pioneer Director-General and the pioneer Chairman the Northern Nigeria Writers Summit, founded by the 19 chapters of ANA in 2008. Dzukogi has received the Highest Niger State Productivity Award for Literary Excellence (2010) and Gani Fawahemin National Prize for Impact on Society, among other numerous awards. BM Dzukogi is married to Malama Khadija Abdullahi Sakiwa with five children and grandchildren.

Yahaya Dangana

Yahaya Dangana is a Nigerian playwright, theatre director, and cultural consultant based in Minna, Niger State. He is known for his work in drama and for directing large-scale artistic performances at major national events. He was the pioneer chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Niger State chapter, and later served as its trustee. He played a central role in inaugurating ANA in the state and in attracting major literary events to Niger State. He is also widely known for his support of young writers and his strong connections with writers across Nigeria. As a writer, Dangana authored novels such as 'Corpse as a Bridegroom' and 'Blow of Fate,' as well as the award-winning play 'The Royal Chamber.' His early work focused on written drama and fiction before he moved more fully into theatre production and artistic direction. Dangana later became prominent as an artistic consultant and director for major national and international events. He worked on the National Sports Festival in Kaduna, served as Artistic Consultant/Director for the FIFA U-17 World Cup hosted by Nigeria, and contributed to productions at the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST). His career bridges literature and performance. He moves between writing plays and translating ideas into large, coordinated stage productions that require precision and collaboration. Despite working on major national platforms, he is known for his modesty and steady commitment to artistic growth. Yahaya Dangana's work has helped shape Niger State's literary and performance culture. His legacy lies in his writing, his theatre productions, and his long-standing support for writers and the arts in Nigeria.
